SUN CITY - Shirley Elaine Mitchell, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, died on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, of complications from meningitis. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Kansas City, Kan. to John R. and Gladys V. Moses, raised in Tulsa, Okla. and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She majored in social work at Drake University in Des Moines, where she met LeRoy Mitchell. They married in March 1957. He predeceased her, dying in 1982 in Des Moines. Mrs. Mitchell stayed at home to raise and is survived by their three children, Jay (Barbara) Mitchell, Karen Mitchell and Lloyd Kerry Mitchell. She volunteered for and was then employed at Callanan Junior High and Roosevelt High School as a secretary. She retired from Roosevelt in 2000 and moved to Sun City to be closer to her sons. Her body was donated to science and will be cremated. A memorial service will be held later this summer at Lakeview United Methodist Church in Sun City. Shirley gave generously to many different organizations. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to one of her favorite charities; St. Jude Children's Hospital, the ASPCA, the Sun City Fire Department, or to your favorite charity.
