OPINION — I’m glad that the president used a part of his State Of The Union address to talk about something that I think can bring the country together, and that is the high cost of health insurance.
Insurance companies have been driving up copays, deductibles and premiums for decades, while their middlemen tighten their grip on what we pay for prescriptions. How is that fair for patients? Shouldn't the goal of these companies be to improve access to quality care for Americans?
Congress is already taking notice of this. Congressman David Schweikert recently joined his committee members in grilling insurance companies on some of their shady practices. That’s a great first step, but it will take a larger team effort to rein in big insurers to improve American health.
