Sheriff: MCSO needs 50 vehicles, hundreds more detention officers

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office needs dozens more patrol vehicles and hundreds more detention officers and sergeants, Sheriff Paul Penzone told county supervisors in a budget meeting last week.

The department is asking for a $426 million budget for the 2022 fiscal year, which begins in July. The amount is preliminary; the county board of supervisors can change it for the final budget, which will be adopted in June. This amount would be a 1.8% decrease from the $434 million MCSO budget for the current fiscal year.
