Shaw: Arizona GOP’s new election laws are ‘needless’ ‘fraud’
Dear Editor: I enjoyed the front-page story on the shameless GOP proposals to eliminate our wildly popular — and essentially fraud free — early and mail in voting.
All being needlessly pushed by the GOP in fealty to Donald Trump and his lies about election fraud.

Letter by Bill Shaw of Sun City
Dear Editor: I enjoyed the front-page story on the shameless GOP proposals to eliminate our wildly popular — and essentially fraud free — early and mail in voting.
All being needlessly pushed by the GOP in fealty to Donald Trump and his lies about election fraud.
My disappointments in the article centered around: the skewed residents’ opinions in the article limited to the 3 women — 2 of whom favor the proposed curtailments — and focus upon registered Republicans.
The story aptly pointed out the 96.5% in the Sun City precinct were early, with only 80 ballots cast on Election Day. Clearly early voting (largely mail in under the old PEVL) is wildly popular here and throughout the State, yet the sampling of opinion in the article suggests the opposite.
Frankly, if the two women who don’t like voting early or by mail can choose to do otherwise, but should not see their narrow opinions imposed on the vast majority. And polls of registered Independents and Democrats were ignored in the story.
The statewide survey cited 90% of voters who wanted our current system of early voting to continue. In short, the move is a hyper partisan GOP lead move to disenfranchise voters whom they believe skew Blue by making it needlessly harder to vote.
Given how thoroughly the 2020 election was analyzed through the fake Cyber Ninjas audit and 6 failed lawsuits, coupled with the tireless efforts of our GOP-controlled county supervisors to refute the lies and misinformation (including their 92-page rebuttal to the Ninjas sham audit), that should have been noted in the story to counter the misguided “too many things that could go wrong” (with early voting) voiced by one resident quoted in the story.
The reality is the exact opposite — we have a smooth functioning system of voting by mail with a reliable signature verification method in place that has been in place for decades.
In the aftermath of all the audits and judicial review, I recall that the only real issues were 50 double-counted ballots through human error by a poll worker — and infinitesimal actual voter fraud — something like a dozen or so (out of 2.1 million) suspect ballots cast — dead voters, or voters who cast ballots in multiple counties.
In contrast an abrupt move to in person voting would likely be an epic disaster with long lines, shortages of ballots at selected polling sites, difficulties in recruiting the army of poll workers that would be needed to staff the required sites, to name just a few of the very real “things that could and invariably would” go wrong.
