West Valley sees substantial rainfall, winds

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Maricopa County, as a severe thunderstorm was located over the northern Glendale, Peoria and Sun City area moving northeast at 10 mph.

According to meteorolgist Sean Benedict at the National Weather Service in Phoenix, strong severe thunderstorms are expected to continue through the mid-afternoon and begin to trail off in the early evening hours.

"Some of these storms are producing severe hail up to one inch in diamater, 50-60 mile per hour winds and high rainfall rates," Benedict said.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Maricopa County, as a severe thunderstorm was located over the northern Glendale, Peoria and Sun City area moving northeast at 10 mph.

According to meteorolgist Sean Benedict at the National Weather Service in Phoenix, strong severe thunderstorms are expected to continue through the mid-afternoon and begin to trail off in the early evening hours.

"Some of these storms are producing severe hail up to one inch in diamater, 50-60 mile per hour winds and high rainfall rates," Benedict said.

Accoding to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County website, rainall totals of over 1 inch in the past hour have been recorded in areas near Westgate and Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale and near Camelback Ranch ballpark in Phoenix.

Power outages were reported in north Peoria as well following the deluge. Roughly 1,700 APS customers were without power in an area bounded by Williams and Beardsley roads and 115th and 95th avenues. CenturyLink is also reporting outages in the north Peoria area.

Camelback Road and the Loop 303 recorded nearly three-quarters of an inch.

Rainfall totals in sections of Tempe topped and inch, according to Maricopa  County estimates.
