Tempe Firefighter Tommy Arriaga will be honored Wednesday with a church service and funeral procession after he died from job-related cancer.

Mr. Arriaga, 36, died March 6 following a battle with colorectal cancer that was related to his work on the Hazardous Materials Response Team of the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, according to a release.

He is survived by his wife Monica and daughters Miranda, 7, and Madalynn, 3.

Mr. Arriaga was honored as the Tempe South Rotary Club Outstanding Firefighter/Employee of the Year on Feb. 28 for his dedication to improving the fire service, even while battling cancer.

This is the second line of duty death in Tempe Fire Medical Rescue’s history. The first was in 198 when Firefighter Ed Gaicki died during a fire at a Tempe business.

Since Mr. Arriaga’s passing, hundreds of people have expressed their condolences to the family and to the City of Tempe, the release states. Now, community members will be able to say farewell during a ceremonial procession from the church to the cemetery.

The service takes place 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11 at Sun Valley Community Church, 6101 S. River Drive, Tempe, near Loop 101 and Guadalupe Road.

The funeral procession will travel from the church to Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale. In order to facilitate a safe and orderly flow of traffic, and accommodate a high volume of emergency vehicles, roadways will be partially closed between the church and the cemetery.

After the church service, around 1 p.m., emergency vehicles from all non-Tempe departments will leave the church and proceed to the cemetery for staging there as part of the burial service.

Around 2 p.m., the procession of the hearse, the family and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue vehicles will leave the church and travel to the cemetery.

For those wishing to line the route to honor Mr. Arriaga, the procession will follow the route below:

River Drive south to Guadalupe Road

Guadalupe Road west to McClintock Drive

McClintock Drive north to 401 N. Hayden Road

The closures of westbound Guadalupe Road and northbound McClintock Drive will be rolling closures, meaning that the streets will open once the procession has fully passed. All roads should be reopened by 3 p.m.

The burial ceremony will be private.
