Senior students: Older Arizonans return to the classroom

Lifelong learning leads to longer lifespan

Being 80 hasn’t stopped Dorothy Galiger from doing much, including pursuing a doctorate degree.

The Grand Canyon University student was the oldest person in her class when she started in March 2019. She’ll be the oldest when she completes it, hopefully in March 2022, even if she has no plans to put it to use. She says her age and life experience has only added to the experience for her and her young classmates.

“My classmates, my cohort group, are all younger than my children,” she said. “As a result, I have learned so much more about that generation, and these fellow students have been such wonderful friends for me, helped me in so many ways and they have supported me in so many ways. I think in return I have added some maturity to the classroom and to our processes. So it’s kind of an even exchange. We both gained from it.”
