While the Oct. 9 Arizona Clean Elections U.S. Senate debate gave Democrat Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake a chance to clarify their policy positions, both candidates focused mostly on each other.
That focus wasn’t even limited to border and immigration issues, though moderators allowed those topics to take up about half of the one-hour debate in the race for the Senate seat being vacated by Kyrsten Sinema.
“This is Kari Lake — whenever she doesn’t have an answer, she goes to the border or to a personal hit,” Gallego said toward the end of the hour as moderators tried to move on to election security. “This is a person who has shown no leadership and has done quite the opposite.”
