As metaphors, roads and bridges represent new endeavors, advancement and opportunity; but real-life infrastructure — when not properly maintained and upgraded — can stymie economic advancement and opportunity.
This is the case in Arizona, where roads, bridges and other public infrastructure remain woefully out of date and underfunded, while the state continues to see a rapid influx of new residents. Lawmakers in Washington are crafting a measure to address infrastructure needs, both locally and nationally.
This year’s surface transportation bill, sponsored by Arizona’s junior senator, passed with unanimous support from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on May 26.
