With the specter of a worsening drought and reduced water allocations, Recreation Centers of Sun City officials are making plans to conserve more water.
The Arizona Department of Water Resources and Central Arizona Project officials are working on the fourth and fifth water management plans. Those will include Arizona receiving about one-fifth less water from the Colorado River through arrangements with the federal government years ago, in which state officials agreed to be the first in line for cuts in exchange for federal funding for the canal system that delivers water to the metropolitan areas.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projected Lake Mead, which stores Colorado River water for Arizona, Nevada, California and Mexico, will fall below an elevation of 1,075 feet this month. If the lake remains below that level in August when bureau officials issue its official projection for 2022, Arizona and Nevada will lose water.
