Scouts prep for Pinewood Derby at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale

The Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council, an independent nonprofit organization chartered by the Boy Scouts of America in Arizona, announces its continued partnership with Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions. Barrett-Jackson will be hosting the third annual Pinewood Derby Open for local scout families.

The Pinewood Derby Open benefits GCC and is scheduled on opening day, Saturday, Jan. 20, at Westworld of Scottsdale, 16601 N. Pima Road, in the auction pre-staging lanes.

“The tradition continues for its third year at Barrett-Jackson, and we are honored to be a part of it,” said Grand Canyon Council CEO and scout executive, Andy Price. “The Pinewood Derby is a time-honored institution that encourages families to work together, experience the sense of accomplishment and the excitement of competition, learn good sportsmanship, and strengthen relationships, which is what Scouting is all about.”

The Pinewood Derby was first introduced as a two-lane wooden track in California in 1953. The goal is for Cub Scouts and their parents to work together turning some wood, four plastic wheels and four nails into a custom race car that is five-ounces-or-less, goes fast and looks “cool.” Bringing this long-standing scouting tradition to Barrett-Jackson allows event sponsors to connect with like-minded automotive enthusiasts and professionals who are committed to youth-focused initiatives.

Barrett-Jackson’s opening day is also Family Day. In addition to the scout activities, Barrett-Jackson will also host STEM Fest, allowing young auction-goers the opportunity to learn and participate in several immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math exhibits.

Scouting in Arizona started more than 100 years ago with a handful of troops scattered across the state and has since grown to serve thousands of youth ranging from ages 5-20. Since GCC BSA was established, more than 48,000 young men and women have become Eagle Scouts, the highest honor awarded by BSA.
