Scottsdale’s STR problem not going away

City staff recommend ways to increase STR ordinances enforcement

Short-term rentals, sometimes called vacation rentals, and the problems they create in Scottsdale’s communities aren’t going away soon, according to Scottsdale Government Relations Director Dale Wiebusch.

There simply doesn’t appear to be the will in the Legislature to repeal Senate Bill 1350, which severely limited cities’ abilities to regulate short-term rentals back in 2016.

Part of those reasons is ideological as people have the right to do what they want with their own homes. Part is monetary as legislators are loath to do anything to harm the tourism industry, and part of it just comes down to some legislators’ dislike for cities and towns, Wiebusch said during the Scottsdale City Council’s Nov. 20 meeting.
