Scottsdale’s parks sales tax will stay on ballot with altered wording

Scottsdale residents will be able to vote on a city ballot measure to create a sales tax to pay for maintenance, personnel and capital improvements at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the city’s 44 parks and WestWorld in the Nov. 5 election with slightly different language than was originally posed.

The city council voted 4-3 during a special, 2 p.m. meeting on Aug. 20 to alter the ballot language slightly, bringing the question into compliance with an Aug. 19 court ruling saying the measure could not stay on the ballot as it was worded.

“This is up to the voters,” City Councilwoman Solange Whitehead said. “There is no decision about a tax being made on this dais. We don’t make those decisions, we simply allow our voters to decide.”
