Scottsdale’s parks sales tax can’t stay on ballot as is

Goldwater Institute wins appeal to block Prop 490 from the Nov. 5 ballot

The City of Scottsdale’s ballot measure to create a sales tax to pay for maintenance, personnel and capital improvements at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the city’s 44 parks and WestWorld cannot stay on the Nov. 5 ballot as it is currently worded.

The Arizona Court of Appeals District One ruled Aug. 19 that the proposed language on the ballot is misleading, meaning the city must change the language, pull the measure known as Prop 490 from the ballot or appeal to the Arizona Supreme Court.

The city council has scheduled an executive session meeting at 2 p.m. on Aug. 20 to discuss how to move forward.
