Scottsdale’s Juneteenth celebration sews together art, history, education

Red food is a marker of Juneteenth — some say it symbolizes blood, some say it symbolizes resilience.

Mia B. Adams has configured that symbol into the sculpture “Freedom Cake” which was showcased during the city of Scottsdale’s community Juneteenth celebration June 17 and at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts June 20-27.

“Freedom Cake” is a large-scale quilt formed into the shape of a red velvet cake with a mirrored baseboard. Red velvet cake is one of the foods abundantly served on Juneteenth, which is June 19.
