Scottsdale Spanish immersion teacher retires after 17 years

Leaves behind legacy of language, culture and care at International School of Arizona

After 17 years teaching Spanish immersion at the International School of Arizona, Maria Mercedes Berman retired at the end of the 2025–2026 school year, leaving behind a lasting impact on countless students.

She introduced students to a new language and culture while creating a classroom many considered a second home.

Berman came to Arizona from Colombia 17 years ago, not intending to stay permanently, but looking for a new experience after her two sons had grown up.
