Scottsdale settles traffic lawsuit for $200k

The city of Scottsdale is settling a lawsuit from 2021 involving a driver hitting an open manhole cover with his vehicle, causing it to flip over.

The Scottsdale City Council approved the settlement for $200,000 during its April 2 meeting.
According to Maricopa County Superior Court files, the incident occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Oct.20, 2020. Benjamin Moulinet was driving south on Scottsdale Road in a GMC Yukon with his pregnant wife, Jayme Hileman, and their three young children (ages 7, 4 and 11 months). The vehicle in front of them swerved to miss something in the road that was later identified as a partially open manhole cover near Princess Drive. Moulinet swerved, too, but hit the manhole cover with one of his rear wheels, causing the vehicle to flip and slide about 105 feet to a stop, according to a city report.
