Scottsdale school board split over perceived conflict of interest

Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board Member Carine Werner’s presence on the superintendent’s supplemental materials committee has come to an end.

Dr. Scott Menzel, superintendent, has disbanded the committee, but the governing board also approved a change in policy during its April 18 meeting stating governing board members cannot sit on superintendent councils, cabinets or committees in order to avoid “undue influence” on the group.

The vote was 3-2 with board president Julie Cieniawski as well as board members Zach Lindsay and Dr. Libby Hart-Wells voting for the change and board members Amy Carney and Carine Werner voting against it.
