Scottsdale school board members disagree about alleged conflict of interest

Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board Vice President Carine Werner’s presence on the district’s supplemental material’s committee is creating a conflict of interest, according to fellow governing board member Dr. Libby Hart-Wells.

Werner’s presence on the committee creates a chilling effect for other committee members considering which curriculum supplemental materials to use in the district, Hart-Wells said during a recent school board meeting.

“(Werner’s) presence cannot possibly not be having an undue influence on the members of that committee,” Hart-Wells said. “It’s inappropriate, it’s prohibited by the board’s ethics policy. It shouldn’t even have to be expressly stated in this policy anyway. We should be able to rely on the morality and the ethics of the people who sit at this board.”
