Scottsdale resident, doctor advocates for patients in underserved communities

In the early 1980s, Dr. Baharak Tabarsi, a longtime Scottsdale resident, and her family left their home country of Iran after facing severe religious persecution. Today, she helps serve communities who experience similar social hardships through her work in the medical field.

As a member of the Baha’i faith, the current Valleywise Health physician was not allowed to freely practice her religion in Iran due to the country’s restrictions on religious freedoms. Baha’is recognize additional messengers that do not align with the teachings of the traditional Islamic faith and thus were and continue to be ostracized because of their religion.

These hardships ultimately forced Dr. Tabarsi and her family to flee the country in search of refuge where they sought asylum in the United States, specifically California.
