Scottsdale Unified School District Spokeswoman Kristine Harrington said the district is working with the police department regarding the matter.
"School safety is a top priority for us," Harrington said in a written statement. "We have a strong relationship with the Scottsdale Police Department and are fully cooperating with their investigation. We work closely with our law enforcement partners, which includes our School Resource Officers, to ensure a safe and secure environment for all to learn and thrive."
A letter home to Mohave parents said the incident occured at the McDonalds and Bashas grocery store across the street from the school.
"Students, while off campus, can still face severe consequences and discipline at school, in addition to potential charges filed by local law enforcement.," the letter signed by principal Paul Ferrero stated." We ask that everyone be good, respectful neighbors and patrons. "
The letter also states, "Earlier in the day, our Scottsdale Police School Resource Officer (SRO) was made aware of the potential for a fight and, as such, officers were already present and immediately able to respond to ensure the safety of our students and community."
