Scammers posing as Scottsdale police are using software to make it appear they are calling from the department and demanding money to pay for a warrant over the phone.
“Our employees will never ask for payment over the phone to clear a warrant,” police said in a release. Anyone receiving the call should hang up and call the non-emergency number for the department 480-312-5000.
According to authorities, the scammers tell the intended victim to pay with credit cards, gift cards or money orders.
“The scammers try to convince you this is real, a very serious matter and threaten you will be arrested if you don’t pay them,” the release stated.
“They may have personal information about you obtained through open-source internet and social media searches.”
Scottsdale police emphasized that the department does not ask for money over the phone to clear a warrant and that warrant information is not released by phone.
