Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega has declared the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
The city is encouraging the public to increase awareness and raise funds for those affected by childhood cancer by wearing gold Wednesday, Sept. 21, to honor children with cancer.
Cancer continues to be the No. 1 cause of death by disease for children. Further, nearly 16,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year, and about 20% will not survive.

Mayor Ortega’s proclamation states that eight years is the average age of a cancer diagnosis in children, and there are approximately 40,000 children on active treatment at any given time.
