Scottsdale hopes to create cooler climate in city

Lighter, reflective pavement could curb the urban heat island effect

The heat is escalating, and the city of Scottsdale is searching for a solution.

During the past two decades, the Scottsdale Airport has averaged 93 days each year with temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and 10 days of 110 degrees Fahrenheit or more. The year 2020 had record high numbers, with 28 days over 110, and 129 days over 100.

“Heat is by far the greatest weather-related health threat in Arizona,” Scottsdale’s website states. “Since 2010, more than 3,000 Arizonans have died because of heat exposure. Record-setting heat in summer 2020 resulted in 10 heat-associated deaths in the city of Scottsdale.”
