Scottsdale hiker’s death being investigated by local police

The death of a Rhode Island woman is being investigated by Scottsdale Police Department after her body was found in the Brown’s Ranch hiking trail system, police officials say.

The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Donna Miller from Rhode Island.

Scottsdale police officials say officers responded to the area around 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 12 to assist the Scottsdale Fire Department after the woman’s husband called 911 when he could not find her at their meeting spot after a planned separation on the trail. The pair had reportedly started their hike around 12:30 p.m.

Brown's Ranch trailhead is at 30301 N. Alma School Road.

In addition to Scottsdale’s police and fire departments, Phoenix Fire Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office search dogs, air unit and mountain rescue team responded to assist in the search operation.

Miller’s body was found by the mountain rescue team shortly after 9 p.m. after an extensive search of the area.

Scottsdale police officials say detectives are working with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, which appears to be due to heat related illness and environmental exposure.
