Scottsdale Collection: Council majority passes major downtown project

The first approvals for Scottsdale’s “next big thing” — a large mixed-use redevelopment known as the Scottsdale Collection — barely passed City Council with a split vote during the final meeting of 2020.

On Dec. 7, the Scottsdale City Council voted 4-3 to approve a development plan and zoning map amendment for the Scottsdale Collection. Mayor Jim Lane and councilors Virginia Korte, Suzanne Klapp and Linda Milhaven supported the project. Meanwhile councilors Kathy Littlefield and Solange Whitehead wanted to continue the vote to 2021, when the new council is seated, citing the project had too many unknown factors, and councilman Guy Phillips simply didn’t like the proposal as it was presented.

The Dec. 7 meeting served as the final City Council meeting for Mayor Lane and councilors Klapp, Korte and Phillips. Newly elected councilors Betty Janik, Tammy Caputi, Tom Durham and new mayor Dave Ortega will be sworn-into office on Jan. 12.
