Scottsdale City Council tightens up rules on electronic devices

Members can no longer bring communication devices to dais

Scottsdale City Councilmember Barry Graham’s alleged emailing and texting during council meetings drew the ire of his colleagues during the council’s April 16 meeting.

The council strengthened its prohibition of using electronic devices for communication purposes while on the dais by amending its rules to say no electronic device can be brought to the dais except those provided by the city, and they cannot have a communication component to their operation.

While Graham was not mentioned by name during the discussion, several council members told the Daily Independent that the move was spurred by his use of communications devices during meetings. They said multiple members of the council, including the mayor and city manager Jim Thompson have all spoken to him about the issue to no avail.
