Scottsdale backs away from grassy front yards

Water conservation measure applies to new homes

New homes built in Scottsdale after Aug. 15 will no longer be able to have grass in their front yards.

The Scottsdale City Council voted unanimously during its July 10 meeting to pass an ordinance limiting water intensive landscape and turf on single family homes to backyards only.

“The city council’s decision further establishes Scottsdale’s commitment to sustainable water management,” Brian Biesemeyer, Scottsdale’s Water’s executive director, said in a written statement issued after the vote. “By adopting this ordinance, Scottsdale aims to lead the way in water conservation practices, setting an example for other communities across the region.”
