Questions are cropping up around Arizona’s education voucher program, which is reportedly estimated to cost taxpayers around $900 million by 2024, significantly more than was projected.
The Empowerment Scholarship Account program, which expanded last year to include all Arizona school children, allows parents to send their children to any school — public or private — and take their alloted education tax money with them.
Proponents of the program say it opens up more school choice in the state while opponents say it allows wealthy families to pay for more expensive private school as it takes money from the Arizona public school system and are questioning who is getting the money.
