School district may form oversight committee for spending $6.76M

Capital repairs from buses to replacing heating, ventilation and air conditioning units the Apache Junction school district sought in its failed 2019 bond election may be purchased in the next four years with a recent windfall of funds.

It includes the $1,650,369.74 sale proceeds from the former Gold Canyon Elementary School building at 5810 S. Alameda Road. Also, the district received $5,111,069.81 from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, which is from the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act signed into law on Dec. 27.

If the Governing Board approves its formation at a meeting March 2, applications would be sought from community members with backgrounds ranging from HVAC repairs to district employees and parents. The committee would have oversight for the funds, said Dr. Krista Anderson, Apache Junction Unified School District superintendent.
