Schacht: Sun City not a fair comparison for Sun City West

While attending a couple of so-called informational meetings and after several conversations with recall members asking for recall signatures, some constant themes kept repeating themselves: comparing Sun City and Sun City West recreation dues, reserve money and the mismanagement of recreation monies. After a recent Sun City recreation board meeting, it became apparent that Sun City was facing a huge issue regarding its Mountain View Recreation Center.
A Sun City resident made the following statement on a Sun City social media outlet called Sun City AZ Chitchat. The resident stated that “I attended my first community meeting since moving here nine years ago. Albeit a SAC-sponsored event. The focus of the meeting was to go over the renovation plans for Mountain View and that this was the third of four meetings. Ten-plus years waiting for the renovation remodel. Come to find out that the powers that be still don’t know what will fit on such a small footprint, plus meet all the county standards or not sure for a few more years. In the meantime the Mountain View Recreation center is in a state of sadness and needs a lot of love. And a lot of love is going to be costly. The project will end up costing more than $25 million, which is more than the capital reserves.”
You might ask what does this have to do with the Sun City West recall? I’m simply pointing out that I would ask the residents of Sun City West to take a drive and look for any facility in Sun City West that’s in decline. Ask yourself if we need a huge capital improvement do we have the funds? You cannot compare the facilities of Sun City to Sun City West or the cost associated.
If you want to maintain excellence then there is a cost to attain excellence. I’ve also heard a no vote of confidence for our general manager and some board members. The cost of wages, insurance, supplies with added inflation all up! Has the maintenance of our facilities suffered? I would argue no. Our GM and current board has done a remarkable job of keeping up our excellence! Vote no to recall!
