PHOENIX – Scam texts have taken a multimedia approach to make the unsuspecting think they owe money to the Arizona Department of Transportation, state officials said.

Some scammers are adding an ADOT Motor Vehicle Division logo to the fraud that claims the recipient has upaid traffic citations and faces nonpayment penalties, according to an ADOT release.

ADOT officials said the agency has seen two versions so far, both of them featuring grammatical errors and originating from overseas.

“Make sure not to click on any links in this or any other suspect text, as the goal is stealing your personal information and money. You should delete these texts and rest easy,” the release stated.

ADOT does not collect for unpaid traffic citations. Another tell in the text, among others, is its use of “DMV” when ADOT has a Motor Vehicle Division - “MVD.”
