Saving West Valley coffee shop is business's new mission

Spencer's Place employs marginalized group who can't find other jobs

Tarra Tanaka has worked as a trained barista at Spencer’s Coffee in Surprise since about the time it opened the first of two locations almost six years ago.

But the 31-year-old Surprise native who now lives in Peoria is worried she may lose the only job she’s ever had because the restaurant near the Goodwill on the southwest corner of Greenway Road and Cotton Lane has been struggling to bring in customers lately.

Tanaka has a cognitive disability, which makes it hard for people like her to find jobs. Statistics show 80% of those with disabilities are unemployed.
