Among the city of Mesa’s heat-relief efforts is a program that lends out air-conditioning units to those in need.

Municipal, nonprofit and faith-based organizations send information about their heat relief efforts to the Maricopa Association of Government’s Heat Relief Network, which provides an interactive internet map of all services available in the county.

It’s a grim milestone no city or county wants to reach.

In 2023, there were 645 heat-related deaths in Maricopa County, an increase of 50% over the previous year.
