Two men fought Saturday afternoon inside a motel room – one of them died and the other claims self-defense, Phoenix police said Sunday.
Officers were called to the motel near 7th Street and Interstate 17 at about 3:45 p.m. May 31 and found an injured man who was taken to a hospital where he died, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
Another man, who had been pointed out by witnesses, was found on the motel grounds and was detained by officers. He, too, was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Preliminary information suggests the men were fighting inside the motel and “using items in the room as weapons which resulted with one of them getting stabbed with a sharp instrument,” the release stated.
The survivor was interviewed and provided detectives a self-defense claim, police said.
The details from the initial investigation were shared with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. In consultation with MCAO, the man was released pending the outcome of the case. A charging decision will be made at the conclusion of the investigation, police said.
