Satisfaction survey gives Tempe high marks

Tempe rankings among the top cities in the country for community satisfaction, survey results show.

The 2023 Community and Business surveys revealed that 81% of Tempe residents are satisfied with the quality of services the city offers – 32% higher than the national average, according to a release.

Satisfaction also has increased since last year. Of the 117 areas assessed in both 2022 and 2023, 89 areas rated higher.

“It’s gratifying that Tempe’s residents recognize the efforts made every day to provide the best city services possible,” Mayor Corey Woods said.

“We appreciate their feedback and will continue to work on those issues they care about the most.”

Since 2007, ETC Institute has provided an annual survey of Tempe residents through mail, e-mail and telephone.

"These surveys provide crucial information needed to understand what our residents and businesses feel are most important,” City Manager Rosa Inchausti said.

“This data is vital to tracking successes and benchmarking progress toward our city’s goals.”

Tempe scored substantially higher than the national average in areas such as:

  • Quality of services offered – 81% satisfaction in Tempe vs. 49% nationally.
  • Image of the city – 74% in Tempe vs. 53% nationally.
  • Value received for tax dollars – 56% in Tempe vs. 33% nationally.
  • Leadership of elected officials – 55% in Tempe vs. 38% nationally.

According to the survey results, city officials said addressing issues related to individuals experiencing homelessness, caring for the condition of streets, sidewalks and infrastructure and ensuring the community is safe should continue to be top priorities.

Through ETC Institute, the city conducts a survey of businesses every other year. The 2023 results show that businesses have a positive view of Tempe and the services provided.

  • 83% think Tempe is business friendly.
  • 88% think Tempe is a welcoming destination.
  • 77% think the business atmosphere in Tempe is good or improving.
