Salvation Army responds to excessive heat warning

After providing heat relief to more than 2,000 people during last week’s five-day stretch of excessive heat warnings, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) will again activate 12 heat relief stations throughout the Valley – where anyone in need can go for indoor cooling and hydration – during excessive heat warning days now issued by the National Weather Service for May 6-7.

The following heat relief stations – which will follow all recommended CDC COVID-19 guidelines for safety – will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 6 and May 7 and on any day the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning:

Apache Junction – Apache Junction Corps Community Center, 605 E. Broadway Road.

Avondale – Estrella Mountain Corps Community Center, 11 N. Third Ave.

Chandler – Chandler Corps Community Center, 85 E. Saragosa St.

Glendale

  • Glendale Corps Community Center, 6010 W. Northern Ave.
  • Valley of the Sun Korean Corps Community Center, 7238 N. 61st Ave.

Mesa – Mesa Corps Community Center, 241 E. Sixth St.

Phoenix

  • Phoenix Citadel Corps Community Center, 628 N. Third Ave.
  • Phoenix Maryvale Corps Community Center, 4318 W. Clarendon Ave.
  • Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center South Mountain, 1375 E. Broadway Road.
  • The Salvation Army Phoenix Family Services Office, 2707 E. Van Buren St., Building 2

Surprise – Sun Cities West Valley Corps Community Center, 17420 N. Avenue of the Arts Blvd.

Tempe – Tempe Corps Community Center, 40 E. University Drive.

A mobile hydration unit will also be dispatched May 6 and 7 to targeted portions of the Valley that have been identified as homeless encampments and areas with high homeless populations.

The Salvation Army EDS is part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Heat Relief Regional Network, the goal of which is to provide resources for vulnerable people and help prevent heat-associated deaths.
