Salt River wild horses removal plan is disappointing

New contract calls for herd to be thinned by more than half

OPINION — Regarding the recent decision on managing the Salt River wild horses:

I believe our state should lead with science, compassion and transparent governance. I am deeply concerned about recent decisions mandating removals of Salt River wild horses —even though the herd is healthy, thriving and being responsibly managed.

In 2016, the Arizona Legislature passed the Salt River Wild Horse Act, establishing strong legal protections for these iconic animals. It explicitly requires that horses may be removed only for humane reasons, with written authorization from state authorities.
