Physicians at a local Banner Health facility have access to a new machine available for patients.
A new robotic-assisted bronchoscopy machine is available at Banner Boswell Medical Center, 10401 W. Thunderbird Blvd., Sun City. Walter Wakwe explained patient Teresa Widener had a pulmonary nodule found during the lung cancer screening program and was being monitored. Dr. Archan Shah attempted a biopsy with a scope and could not get the necessary angle. However, he said Dr. Shah was suspicious enough about the lesion and believed Widener could benefit from further investigation, which is why she was referred to Dr. Wakwe.
“We needed to get a surgical biopsy and in these types of cases Dr. Shah will assist me to mark the nodule and with the robotic bronchoscopy. He was able to reach the nodule and able to biopsy it, which came back as small-cell lung cancer,” he explained.
