Ongoing projects that involve road construction in the city of Mesa include a new 12-inch sewer main and manholes on Country Club Drive, a 10-foot-wide asphalt pathway along the South Canal from the Consolidated Canal north of Brown Road to McKellips Road, and Signal Butte Road improvements from Williams Field Road to Germann Road.

Sewer pipe, manholes
Description: Relief sewer on Country Club Drive, Southern Avenue to Hampton Avenue and on Hampton Avenue east of Country Club Drive.
Schedule: The project is estimated to begin February 2022 and is to be completed within four months.
Details: The city of Mesa has contracted with Garney Construction to install a new 12-inch sewer main and manholes parallel to the existing 8-inch sewer main in Country Club Drive from Southern Avenue to Hampton Avenue and on Hampton Avenue east of Country Club Drive.
Funding: From 2014 wastewater bonds.

Gas main
Description: High pressure gas main extension on Queen Creek Road, Signal Butte Road to Meridian Road.
Schedule: The project began in December 2021 and will be completed within three months.
Details: The city of Mesa has contracted with Hunter Contracting to install a 12-inch high pressure steel gas pipe in Queen Creek Road from 600 feet east of Signal Butte Road to west of Meridian Road. APL will be the sub-contractor performing the gas line work. These improvements will help support growth in the area and provides additional feed to support the gas system and customers.

Street pavement
Description: Residential street overlays for 24th Street to Lindsay Road from Brown Road to Adobe Street, Broadway Road to Pueblo Avenue from Gilbert Road to 24th Street, Greenfield Road to 48th Street from McKellips Road to Ivy Street and Broadway Road to Enid Avenue from Higley Road to RWCD Canal.
Schedule: The project began in Fall 2021 and will be completed by Spring 2022.
Details: The city of Mesa has contracted with Talis Corp. to improve concrete and pavement to various residential streets. The overlay process is done in four phases:
Phase 1, removal and replacement of localized sections of concrete curb and gutter, ADA accessible ramps and some sidewalks and driveways;
Phase 2, lower utility manholes and valves below the existing roadway in preparation of paving;
Phase 3, mill (remove) the edges of existing asphalt and install new asphalt;
Phase 4, post paving, utility adjustment of manholes and valves back to the surface of new asphalt.

Canal pathway
Description: South canal shared use pathway, Consolidated Canal to McKellips road.
Schedule: The project was to begin January 2022 and will be completed within six months.
Details: The city of Mesa has contracted with Combs Construction to construct a 10-foot-wide asphalt pathway along the South Canal from the Consolidated Canal north of Brown Road to McKellips Road. Improvements include LED lighting, a 4-foot decomposed granite equestrian trail and trail signage. Other improvements include pedestrian ADA ramps and signals at the intersections of the South Canal and Horne and at the South Canal and McKellips Road.
Funding: ADOT federal grant under the TA-MAG program.

New arterial roadway
Description: Signal Butte Road improvements, Williams Field Road to Germann Road.
Schedule: Construction began in November 2021 and will last for approximately 12 months.
Details: The city of Mesa has contracted with Sunland Asphalt to have a new arterial roadway along the Signal Butte Road alignment for 2 miles between Williams Field Road and Germann Road. This project will be constructed in tandem with the extension of State Route 24, the Gateway Freeway, from Ellsworth Road to Ironwood Road. The city will construct a new roadway on the Signal Butte Road alignment providing a connection to the new freeway. The existing one-half-mile segment of Signal Butte Road south of Williams Field Road will also be reconstructed. This project will improve connectivity, increase traffic flow, and promote development in southeast Mesa. The scope of work for the project includes: Construct a new arterial roadway between Williams Field Road and Germann Road, install drainage improvements to accommodate off-site storm water and pavement drainage, install traffic improvements including traffic signals at the intersections, roadway lighting infrastructure, pavement markings, traffic signage, and fiber optic cabling, and install new utilities under the arterial roadway and adjust existing utilities to grade.

Intersection improvements
Description: Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive intersection improvements.
Schedule: The project began October 2020 and will be complete approximately April 2022.
Details: The city of Mesa is improving the intersection of Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive. The improvements include widening the intersection to include three through lanes on Stapley Drive, a dedicated right turn lane on eastbound Southern Avenue and bicycle lanes. Other improvements include new raised medians, curb, gutter, sidewalks, new streetlights and traffic signals.
Funding: Highway Safety Improvement Program, Arterial Life Cycle Program and local funding.
