Roads to ease 163rd Avenue traffic in Surprise remain long-range solution

Road relief for Surprise residents living and drivng north of the intersection of 163rd and Grand avenues is either waiting for funding or in the early planning phases.

Its timing comes as Surprise and Maricopa County residents in the area are tired of planning unwieldy routes to avoid this regular area of rush hour traffic jams.

The project that should be the biggest source of relief for the clogged Grand Avenue/Loop 303 exit and the backed up intersection 163rd and Grand avenues — a Loop 303 exit heading north along the Litchfield Road alignment — appears to be the furthest away. Other exit routes are either available but limited by one lane — the Happy Valley Road connection from 163rd Avenue east to Vistancia — or just now getting started — a northern 303 exit for El Mirage Road.
