Rezoning pursued along planned railroad spur in SE Mesa

Property could be rezoned for the development of 2.5 million square feet of industrial buildings in a planned 6-mile railroad spur alignment in southeast Mesa over objections by the Union Pacific Railroad, which is seeking a dedicated right of way.

The Mesa planning and zoning board voted 5-1 recently, with Jeffrey Crockett dissenting and Shelly Allen absent, to recommend the city council approve a site plan and rezone 155 acres north of Pecos Road and east of Sossaman Road from agriculture to general industrial with a planned-area development overlay. Crockett had sought a continuance for 30 days to give the applicant and railroad time to meet.

The council will discuss the site plan and rezoning at a future meeting.
