Resolution to archaic long-term school spending cap still up in the air

Arizona legislature waived AEL through this year’s budget, but spending limit will remain without long-term fix

Arizona public school districts got a break from the newly signed state budget because it included a provision to waive the state constitution amendment known as the aggregate expenditure limit that restricts school spending.

Education advocates say this will save districts tens of millions of dollars — for now.

The AEL puts a cap on districts’ expenditures and must be overridden by the state legislature annually to keep districts from being forced to make massive cuts.
