Residents take a stand in Sun City

Show opposition to panhandlers

Some Sun City residents have had enough of panhandlers roaming the shopping centers along Grand Avenue on either side of 107th Avenue and they are taking action.

Beggars routinely station themselves on the medians at that intersection flashing signs that implore people to give them money because they are allegedly homeless, out of work or a number of other misfortunes. But they became more aggressive, now roaming the parking lots asking shoppers for money. Some residents feel intimidated by the behavior and no longer shop in that area, according to Hadley Starkey, one of the organizers of the resident action.

“Usually there are people roaming this parking lot demanding money,” he said. “When they are done, they get in a nice car and go.”
