The proposed BNSF intermodal facility, logistics park and logistics center in northwest Maricopa County is not a “done deal,” as some have been saying.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote in November on this important issue. BNSF has stated publicly it intends to claim preemption on the intermodal portion of their proposed facility; however, from what I understand, this does not give them authority over the complete project.
To those saying this has been “in the works for a long time,” I’d like to point out that BNSF did not purchase the majority of the land until 2022, well after there were established residents in the area, including the Nadaburg School, a church and medical clinic, and people depending on their homes for safety and security. These people have established homes right next to what used to be Arizona State Land Department-owned acreage.
The threats are immense, not just to the Wittmann area, but to us in Sun City West. Some of those documented and verifiable threats include increased traffic, air quality, water quality, noise pollution, night sky light pollution, flooding risks, cost to the taxpayers for infrastructure. The list goes on.
Please, residents of Sun City West, become informed of these threats. The greater Phoenix area already has the fourth worst air in the nation; let’s not make it No. 1.
Write letters of opposition to each member of the Board of Supervisors, planning and zoning, state and national legislators and our governor, and let them know your feelings about this threat to our way of life.
Please submit comments at yourvalley.net/letters or email them to AzOpinions@iniusa.org. We are committed to publishing a wide variety of reader opinions, as long as they meet our Civility Guidelines.
