Renee Good’s death: America’s galvanizing moment?

OPINION — Renee Nicole Macklin Good’s killing by an ICE agent has the potential to play a role in modern American politics similar to the Boston Massacre’s role in the revolutionary era: a galvanizing moment when routine injustice suddenly feels intolerable.

On Jan. 7, 2026, Good, a 37‑year‑old U.S. citizen and legal observer, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an enforcement action in Minneapolis. Video and eyewitnesses indicate the agent fired three shots into her slowly moving vehicle, sparking protests from Minneapolis to Phoenix and demands for a federal civil rights investigation.

Federal officials, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, quickly framed Good as a domestic terrorist, deepening partisan outrage.
