OPINION — Carolyn Copeland argues in her letter that Renee Good deserved to die because she “broke the law,” calling her “a law breaker and a criminal,” and claiming that “when she took the law into her own hands and decided to try to escape, she reaped the deadly result.” That framing isn’t supported by the facts.
Good and her wife pulled over on a residential street to see what was happening. They remained stopped for several minutes. Eventually, Good was given contradictory commands: move the car and get out of the car. No one can comply with both.
In response, Good began to drive away slowly. She smiled at ICE agents and verbally assured them she had no problem with them. Agent Ross opened fire. Good was shot and killed while complying, not fleeing.
