Millennium vs. Perry was the type of matchup the Arizona Interscholastic Association created the boys basketball Open Division for in 2022.
A new challenger from 5A emerged and the Tigers entered the March 2 Open Division final with a 25-4 record and a 21-0 mark against Arizona opponents. Perry, the 2022 6A champion and original Open Division champ in 2023, entered hanging on to its crown after three losses to 6A powers and an 83-79 semifinal win over Chandler district rival Basha.
Better yet, the Tigers and Pumas had not squared off during the regular season or in any significant out of season setting since the Prime Time Tournament at Brophy Prep in June 2022.
