Question of the Week: Should Arizona gubernatorial candidates cross the political aisle in selecting running mates?

Posted

For the first time, Arizonans will select a lieutenant governor in November. The new office will be the No. 2 position in state government. Gov. Katie Hobbs raised eyebrows when she named former Mesa Mayor John Giles, a conservative Republican-turned-independent, as her running mate. It was viewed by many as a shrewd move to attract centrist voters from the state’s large and growing independent pool of voters as well as disenfranchised Republican voters who do not align with MAGA GOP candidate Andy Biggs, who chose Republican Sine Kerr from the West Valley as his running mate. What do you think about a candidate reaching across the aisle for a running mate?
