A former Queen Creek massage therapist accused of sex crimes is back in the United States after he was arrested in Sonora, Mexico.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Godfrey Diaz Romero, 63, was brought back to Arizona on May 16 and faces charges that include sexual assault, kidnapping, sexual abuse and fraudulent schemes.

In 2020, court documents showed the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office learned of two incidents of alleged sexual abuse, one in April and another in early June.

The victims reported going to Romero’s home near Power and Riggs roads where he worked as a massage therapist.

While there, the victims reported being sexually abused during their massages, records state.

One of the victim’s participated in a one-party consent call with the then 60-year-old man. and  later that day, MCSO detectives arrived at his house and arrested him without incident.

MCSO learned the man had not been licensed since 2004, and that the state Board of Massage Therapy had issued a cease-and-desist letter against him.

The man was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on various charges, including sexual assault and kidnapping.

After his initial release, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Maricopa County Attorney’s Office requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service WANTED Violent Offenders Task Force in locating and arresting Romero, according to a release.

“When the investigation pointed that he fled to Mexico, the U.S. Marshals Service contacted Mexican Law Enforcement and requested assistance in locating and returning Romero back to the United States,” federal officials said in the release.

“The arrest of Romero is the result of a thorough investigation by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives with significant assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and Mexican law enforcement,” Acting U.S. Marshal Van Bayless said.
